Season notes:

Coached by Lou Holtz (2nd season) except for the game against Clemson. The team was coached by John Gutekunst in the Independence Bowl. He was the assistant coach and was named interim head coach when Holtz announced he was leaving to coach Notre Dame. Gutekunst was later named the permanent head coach.
